the book

so, ian and i are taking a suggestion that we heard recently to heart. this suggestion was that it might be wise to start reading about pregnancy before you are pregnant, because while you are pregnant you'll probably want to read about babies, because once you have a baby there will be far less time for reading. hmmmm. good point.

anyhow, we're in canberra, australia, and i have a whole booklet of the bookstores here and we're going to buy a book. when we get home we'll use the library and perhaps buy more, but for now, just one. we want a book that'll cover in a bit of depth the trying-to-conceive process along with the process of pregnancy from a perspective that we can relate to. so we thought we'd see what you all thought.

which book was most helpful/interesting to you? which book do you wish you would have read sooner? what is the book you'd recommend for us?

  1. That's a good idea, in theory. I found that things I read didn't really have a whole lot of meaning until I was in the situation. For example, "OMG, I have the worst acid reflux in the world... what am I allowed to take?!" I never had acid reflux before in my life, and I certainly didn't remember what any book about pregnancy said to take for it. I have a bunch of books about pregnancy that people gave me and I skimmed, but I mostly looked stuff up online and perused the boards at babycenter.com.

I find the same thing now that the baby's born. I tried to read ahead about babies, but you just don't know what's relevant until you HAVE the baby.

  2. yeah, i totally know all of that in theory, but i'm a total researcher and i just WANT to read even though i know in practice it's not that useful. i sort of can't NOT read about it, so the hope is that i'll get some suggestions of books that might even actually be helpful. since i'm gonna read anyhow! i want ian to have a better idea about what to expect. and i want ideas...less maybe about the details of things like how i'll feel and what to do about it (i'm sure i'll also just go to the internet for hat) and more about general ideas and philosophies and tips in terms of conception, childbirth, and even child rearing.

  3. The books I've liked best so far are Ina May Gaskin's hippie birth story books, and then what is basically a picture book published by DK called "Pregnancy Day-by-Day". I think I already mentioned this one, but in terms of the conception process "Taking Charge Of Your Fertility" was very, very helpful.
